One of the ranking criteria of search engine is to have good quality back links. The more quality back links you have, the better your search engine ranking. The emphasis here is QUALITY.

The best way to get back link is to find potential partner and exchange links with them. During the course of this link exchange exercise, most sites fall into the trap of acquiring lot and lot of back links. They are after the QUANTITY.

So the question is: Which one is more important? Quality or Quantity?

In term of importance, both are of equal status. However, in term of priority, QUALITY should always come first. The best result is often achieved only when you are very particular about who you are linking to and who are linking to you.

Who

Don’t be a link farm and don’t link to a link farms. They are web pages with lot of categories and links (more than 50) that are not related to their sites themes. Being a link farm does not contribute to your search engine ranking. It only dilute your site themes, degrade your site and might even get banned by the search engine. I don’t think this is what you want. Be particular about who you are linking to.

What

What is your link partner writing about your link? Is there a description about your site or only a hyperlink to your site? Even SERP shows the title and description of your site, so that should be the minimum criteria for any link exchange. If your link partner are not providing a description of your site, refuse the link exchange.

When

Initiate a link exchange campaign only when your site is completed. Do not ask for link exchange while your site is still under construction. Vice versa, do not accept any link exchange request when your link partner site is still under construction or have lot of dead links.

Where

Identify where your reciprocal link is situated. Make sure that it is within 3-clicks access from the main page. The reason being; the search engine seldom spider links that are more than 3 tier away from the main page. To derive the maximum benefits from a link exchange, ensure that your link partner site is of similar theme as your site and your link is within 3 clicks access from the main page.

Why

Always ask yourself why are you linking to this particular site? Is it because it has quality content that you feel can benefit your readers or because it has a high PR? For whatever the reason, make sure that it is validated. Do not link just for the sake of linking or only to please the spider. The best site that you want to exchange links with is certainly the one that is related to your site topic, have quality content and a high PR (preferably at least PR4).

With these who, what when, where why, you should be able to find plenty of quality site to link exchange with.
